Brian Franko is an artist living in Stroudsburg, Pa. He works primarily with watercolor or graphite to produce a variety of subjects ranging from realistic landscapes and cityscapes to cartoons. After graduating from Kutztown University with a B.F.A. in Communication Design, he pursued a freelance career in illustration. Working with agencies and design studios, he produced illustrations for many businesses in the Harrisburg, Pa. area. In collaboration with Mantis Design in Stroudsburg, PA, Brian created posters that are internationally distributed in over 5,000 college bookstores and poster/print shops. Brian is currently a full-time interactive designer for an electronic marketing agency in the Lehigh Valley.
TECHNIQUE The drawings are done on 22"x30" watercolor paper, large printing paper, or masonite covered with acrylic gesso. Concentrating on rendering space, Brian focuses on atmospheric perspective to create an illusion of depth. He often begins a graphite drawing by covering the entire surface with powdered graphite using a cloth. And then, using an eraser, defines the shapes and highlights. A variety of textures and tones are achieved by combining charcoal and/or rubbing alcohol with the graphite and applying it with a brush or scraping the surface with a palette knife.
