ART HISTORY | CONTEMPORARY ARTIST OF THE MONTH

DALI, Salvador
The Persistence of Memory
Oil on canvas
9 1/2 x 13 in. (24.1 x 33 cm)
The Museum of Modern Art, New York

Dali, a leader in the surrealist movement, tried to express thought and psychology in his paintings. Representations of phobias, complexes, and other examples of abnormal psychology are common in his work. The persistence of memory explores the mystery of time in the human mind.

REMBRANDT, van Rijn
Self-Portrait
1661
Oil on canvas
114 x 94 cm
English Heritage, Kenwood House, London

Rembrandt's self portraits, as with all of his work, use very dynamic lighting. Through the use of lighting, the artist controls where the viewer looks. In this case, the top section of the painting around the head is observed before the lower portion of the painting in shadows.

WHISTLER, James
Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother
1871
Oil on canvas
56 3/4 x 64 in. (144.3 x 162.5 cm)
Musee d'Orsay, Paris

Whistler considered form and color more important than subject matter. He compared his paintings to music, calling them "arrangements" and "symphonies." Although he painted in the later half of the 1800s, Whistler's concept of painting as an arrangement of colors and shapes influenced abstract painting of the twentieth century.

WINSLOW, Homer
The Fog Warning
1885

In the late 1800s, a style that would later be known as the Hudson River School emerged in America. The style is known for grand landscape and seascape paintings. The Fog Warning by Winslow Homer illustrates the Hudson River School style.
